Fire Department Christmas Tree Safety Tips
Posted: November 29th, 2021
The Melbourne fire department has given us some great advice this year with regards to Christmas Tree safety tips as we are preparing for the holidays. See below a list of tips that will be helpful to keep us all safe. Happy Holidays!!
- Get a fresh tree whose needles do not easily fall off or a UL-listed artificial tree that is "flame resistant/retardant".
- Make sure the tree is at least three (3) feet away from any heat source (like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights).
- Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
- Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
- UL-listed Christmas lights (pay attention to the indoor/outdoor use).
- Check your decor for damage and replace as needed.
- Do not overload your sockets - no more than three (3) light strands in a row.
- Turn off your lights before bed or while you are away from home.
- Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home.
